Where’s my money? Unfortunately, it’s a question that a lot of business owners, and especially freelancers, have had to ask at some point.
In this 3-part series we explore options, and experiences, in pursuit of recovering monies owed for work conducted. For many it can feel like a hopeless situation and a confusing process to navigate in a way that minimizes risk for business and brand.
This episode features three professionals who all had to engage recovery resources and tactics in handling clients who refused to pay up. They each share their experiences, they steps they took, outcomes, and advice for others looking for insight into handling similar situations.

Tracy Bagatelle-Black has more than 25 years of experience in public relations. From the early days of the internet representing companies such as HBO, Warner Brothers and Electric Minds to today’s world of blockchain and cryptocurrency representing Vice Industry Token, The Crypto Invest Summit and Vaultbank, she has ridden the technology wave and then some. Along the way, she has worked on a diverse set of clients including Lowrider, Mazda, The California Milk Board, PetSmart, Avery Dennison, Penthouse, Union College, Stevie B, Activision, Virtualscopics, The Young Turks and many more. She has also worked at Terpin Communications (now Transform Group) and Hill & Knowlton, doing media relations and learning social media along the way. She has worked both in-house as a director of PR and on the agency side, as well as a freelance publicist and social media manager. As a freelance journalist, she has contributed to AOL, Gannett News Service, California Computer News and more. Bagatelle-Black is also a licensed marriage and family therapist based in California and provides counseling in person and through telehealth at Santa Clarita Therapy.
When he’s not generating positive media coverage and raising brand awareness for Havas Formula’s technology clients, Keith Pillow remains active fulfilling his destiny as one of the PR profession’s last remaining Renaissance men. An avid reader, cinephile, foodie, chef and professional pinball player, he enjoys playing competitive golf and tennis, watching pro/college football, working out in the gym, waxing poetic on Twitter, and writing his humorous autobiographical book detailing his many adventures in the PR realm. With over 25 years of combined in-house and agency experience, Keith serves as vice president of Havas Formula’s High Tech group, where he oversees accounts in a broad spectrum of industries and enterprise technology segments.
An insightful corporate communications practitioner and product marketer, Keith specializes in implementing high-impact, results-driven integrated strategies and programs that combine earned, paid, and owned/branded-media placement/generation techniques, with cutting-edge social media, mobile marketing, and content marketing channels. He has worked with dozens of early-stage and start-up technology concerns in his career, as well as major brands such as BMC Software, Compaq, Nortel Networks, Sony PlayStation, Stamps.com and Yahoo.
Keith holds B.S. degrees in marketing and international business from the University of Colorado (#GoBuffs!), a MBA in marketing from Pepperdine University, and an accreditation in public relations (APR) designation from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). In addition, is an adjunct professor of marketing at California State University Los Angeles (CSULA), where he teaches advertising and other marketing courses, and an adjunct professor of PR at Pepperdine University. Keith is also a frequent guest lecturer and panelist at other area colleges and universities.
Edward Yang is founder and managing partner of Firecracker PR, an award-winning public relations agency in Orange County, California. He's also author of the book: "RepGold: A Step-by-Step Guide to Successfully Repair and Build Your Online Reputation".
